Ascent Trip ReportAfter my enjoyable ascent of Kern Peak, I headed back to the trail and then down to the meadows. I then headed straight up Templeton Mtn. The register on top is a typical MacLeod-Lilley one, dating to 1984. The last ascent in the register was a group of friends: Matt Hengst, Jenn Blackie, and Amin Faraday! The ascent is unremarkable, steepening as you ascend. The top has views in between the trees in most directions.
Once I arrived back at camp, I gathered my stuff and headed for the trailhead. I topped off with a liter of water at the South Fork of the Kern River when I crossed it. Once I topped out on the pass next to Brown Mtn, I made the only bad decision of the trip: I opted to contour around to the PCT instead of losing and re-gaining 1,000 ft down to Monache Meadow and back up. This was a very poor idea. It started out in an nice open forest, but eventually got into a burned area with heavy brush - ugh... It ended up being 5 miles of walking vs 4 miles if I had stuck to the trail and probably enough up, down, struggling, and bushwhacking that more than exerted more effort than the measly 1,000 ft of gain would have been. Poor decisions....
I arrived at the PCT at 8:45 pm, an hour after I would have reached it had I just taken the 1,000 ft of descent and re-ascent. Good call. The hike out took me another 3 hours. I arrived at the Yaris at 11:57pm, beating my goal of midnight! I arrived home in Vista at 4am. Pics
Stats for the trip: 54.4 miles 31.5 hours hiking |
