Ascent Trip Report

Hiked Mt. Pemi for the first time on 5/6! I was pleasantly surprised- great views for so easy a hike.

I walked up the bike path 150 yd. to the start of the trail (left). I went under US 3 via tunnel, then dipped down and crossed the north and southbound lanes of I-93 via tunnel. From there, the climb really began. Grades were mostly easy, with a few moderate parts. Down low, there were brooks and streams everywhere, which made for some nice nature sounds. At the midpoint of the hike, there were a few big mud patches, but they were avoidable. After that, I ran into some small patches of snow/ice. They too were easily avoidable. At 1.4 mi, I reached the junction with the Indian Head Trail, and a few minutes later, I got to the first open ledge, which was huge and had a great view out toward the southern Kinsman Ridge and Mt. Moosilauke. Loon Mtn, Mt. Tecumseh, Mt. Osceola, and the town of Lincoln could be seen as well. The true summit, which was a little farther up, had less spectacular views, but most of the Franconia Range was visible.

Excellent way to spend an afternoon!
