Ascent Trip Report

Went with Adam Walker, Heather Anderson, Matt Lemke and Josh Lewis. We camped at Mystery and started at 5am. The snow started at around 4,400' and was not quite solid. We had a combination of crampons on icy forest floor and post-holing in basins all day. There were plenty of logs for creek crossings. in the basin leading to Reynolds' South Ridge I developed excruciating pain in my left knee. They understood if I turned around but Josh lent me a pole, while Heather Anderson gave me a pain relief patch and I just went for it. I lagged behind but not too far. The final class 3 bit would have been better with either more snow, none at all, or crampons (I stupidly left my crampons at the bottom of the climb) I ended up on some more solid 4th to avoid relying on my knee to handle the loose 3rd. A steep snow arete with a cornice on the other side finished the job leading to an amazing 360° view of the Chelan Sawtooths. We all summitted by about 2:30pm taking photos, having snacks, signing the register and had one of the best glissades down in recent memory. My knee deteriorated throughout the day and I fell behind by the time we hit the trail in spite of NSAIDs from Adam. The group was understanding and we thought it was a great trip otherwise. I fear I may not be getting out much the rest of this year as a result though. An MRI or MD visit is in order.
