Ascent Trip ReportAn easy CHP so why has nobody done this one in a long time?
First of all the second Cruse Ridge CHP is in Jackson County and that was confirmed to me by a local I chatted with. Second the entire Cruse Ridge area is quite lovely ridge for this part of KY some nice views on the drive up and the dogwoods were in bloom. I stopped at the house of Micheal Van Winkle (as in Rip Van Winkle) a very chatty and friendly man who lives in the house at the corner of the driveway to the towers at the top.
Mr. Van Winkle permitted me to park in front of his house and talked excitedly about Anglin Falls (shows on the topo) which he said "I'll be you came up here to see the falls?" I had no idea what he was talking about but the top of the creek was the border of his large piece of land. He permitted me to hike down the road to the creek to start my TH there at ELEV 1500. It sounded like he would let me hike down and see the falls but I was on a tight schedule to go hike the Berea Forest again so I simply hiked up the tower from his creek. In hindsight, looking at the falls on the topo, I should have said, do ya mind? He is a former Navy and trained in Orlando so we had a nice chat. He welcomed me back anytime and sounded very friendly and open to meeting more CHPers and friendly people in the area. The short hike to the towers was uneventful.
