Ascent Trip ReportThe Maple Creek Lookout Tower site is the northern candidate for the Carroll County highpoint, but the lookout tower cannot be climbed. The lower steps have been removed and the higher steps appear to be very unsafe with daylight visible through some of the wooden steps. This highpoint is easily accessed from a paved road on the east side in Natchez Trace State Park. It is a short 100 yard steep climb from the road to the base of the lookout tower. Don't make the same mistake I did, however. On the way to this highpoint, I passed a dirt road with a sign in front of it that read, "Tower." I assumed it would lead me directly to the summit. This road took me farther and farther away from the highpoint and worse yet, I got struck on a steep muddy hill. With much determination, I was able to back my car down the muddy hill and get a fast moving start on leveler ground in order to make it up the steep muddy grade, but it took three tries. I was sure glad to be back on a paved road! There is no view from the base of Maple Creek Lookout Tower due to the trees. It's a shame the tower had to be closed. |
