Ascent Trip Report

A warm, sunny, beautiful day – perfect for a “spring” hike in the Catskills... Group of 5 - Northeast High Peaks & Photos (Rollo organizer, Mabel, Peng, Bill and me – Cynthia) hiked the Wittenberg-Cornell-Slide traverse, with car shuttles at Woodland Valley parking lot (start point) and Slide parking lot (end point). Nice mellow hike along the Wittenberg-Cornell-Slide (WCS) red trail blaze to the 3 peaks, then yellow trail blaze marker for the last 0.7 miles to the Slide PA.
We started bare boot, but soon had to pull out the micro spikes as we rose in elevation – packed snow (at least 2-3 feet) and plenty of ice in many spots. Clothing was stripped down to base layer, as the sun shone so intensely along our hike. Bare boot opportunities at the trailhead, Wittenberg summit, Cornell summit, path from Cornell to Slide and Slide summit. Micro spikes were very handy summiting Wittenberg, getting through the Cornell crack, and descending Slide. The last 0.5 mile or so was bare boot ~ April, ‘transition month’ in the Catskills. We ran into many hikers along the way, including 3 teenagers who wore sneakers, shorts, t-shirts for the hike (and finished)! I need Wittenberg-Cornell for my W35, which I plan to complete this Dec 2015, so this was good practice and gave me a brief glimpse of what I would need to do in preparation. Not sure if I would go the entire traverse or hit Wittenberg-Cornell and turn back around. The 2 walls leading to Slide do not appear to be ‘snow shoe friendly’, though micro spikes were fine

Start (Woodland Valley parking lot) 10:15am
Wittenberg 12:55p
Cornell 2p
Slide 4p
Finish (Slide parking lot) 6p
Est. 9.7 miles (according to the signage at the trailhead for Wittenberg)

Slow on the trail today – carried 4.5L water; probably only needed 3.5-4L, but good training grounds. Nice photos along the way, all the scenic shots that I now savor from this hike, after going through 35 peaks and realizing how many did not have as scenic views! Plus, I can officially record the W-C-S trail (9.1 miles, red trail blazer) on the All-Trails list!
