Ascent Trip ReportFor about a mile E of the town of Jefferson, NC-88 and US-221 share the same road. At their western junction, where they split, I headed W on NC-88. 0.8 mile later, I turned R (N) on N Main, for which the sign is obscure and easily missed. 0.9 mile later, I turned L on Ashe Park Rd, where a sign indicates that this is the way to Ashe County Park. 0.4 mile later, I entered the park itself. I headed up the main park road for 0.3 mile until it ended at a parking lot at a frisbee golf course and a playground.
For the hike from here I used Tom Layton's excellent report. He advises using GPS, but ironically his report is so good that it totally eliminates any need for GPS. In fact I was able to navigate entirely on his verbal directions. I carried a topo map, but I hardly ever used it since Tom's report is all you really need.
