Ascent Trip ReportBetween Michael Schwartz and Ben Lostracco, this trip report doesn't have much to add here. We elected to take the AT sb route, picking up the summit of Mt. Algo on our way back. Where the AT crosses Thayer Brook, we did not see the old road mentioned in previous reports, but following the brook upstream past the cascade revealed an obvious path through old farm walls. At the Thayer Brook crossing on Chapel Hill Rd., we discovered the road was mostly flooded out from recent rains, forcing us to follow the brook farther west from the road to find a place to cross. Once the water drains, the road should be walkable again, we were just "lucky". As a result, we climbed up more on the north side of North Preston, and turned to follow the north-south ridge line to the summit. Lots of erratics here, but like a previous visitor, following the height of land brought us right to the register. About fifty feet away from the register, we saw the remains of a wooden lean-to shelter, built against one of the larger erratics on the summit. No idea how long it's been there. Touch as many of the boulders as you need to satisfy you've got the high point, and call it done. OK views of Chapel Pond, but not much else to see. Before the ascent, we saw two watercraft tied to a dock on one of the small ponds on the north side of Thayer Brook, but other than that, we saw no evidence of recent human visitors. Total distance, 4.2 Miles, approximately 1600ft of elevation gain, 2:15 minutes round trip, including the delay at Chapel Pond Rd and detour on Mt. Algo. Finally, a personal note. This ascent marks our completion of the county prominence points for Connecticut!
