Ascent Trip ReportA trip to 3 peaks .... 5.5 miles, 2:45 hours RT.
For this county high pointing trip, I took-in 2 other peaks, all as per this one only TR, all distances are guess estimates.
TUCKER COUNTY was created in 1856 and named after Henry St. George Tucker, a judge and congressman from Williamsburg, VA. As of the 2010 census its population was 7,141, making it the second-least populous county in WV. Its county seat is Parsons.
From Harman, junction #33/32, I went north on #32 for 8.8 miles to the Canaan State Park Ski Area on the right, then drove to the parking in front of the lodge, this was my TH.
WEISS KNOB .... 1.75 miles, 50 minutes ascent from TH.
I walked/climbed the Timber Ski Trail (the furthest east ski run) 1.2 miles to the Ski Lift Station on the summit, where I picked up the green blazed Bald Knob Trail and followed it southeast as it descends .3 miles to the N-S pipe line right-of-way (the green blazed trail turns left). I turned right (south) and climbed .25 miles to its crest. The HP is to the right at 25 yards inside the heavily wooded summit.
I backtracked to the green blazed trail.
BALD KNOB-NORTHWEST SUMMIT .... 1.1 miles, 32 minutes from Weiss summit.
This peak is not in the PB Library, I added it as a provisional because of its beauty/popularity.
Once back to the Bald Knob Trail I followed it north (it parallels the right-of-way) .75 miles to a signed trail junction, 150 yards before the Northwest Summit. The Bald Knob Trail goes left as it circles the Summit below the overlook, a sign "Bald Knob" points north (up the right-of-way) to the Summit. The pipe line goes right over the summit area, the actual HP is right (east) of the right-of-way, the rocky overlook on the west side offers superb views.
BALD KNOB ... .6 miles, 16 minutes from Northwest Summit.
20 yards south of the Northeast Summit is a woods road heading east. I followed it for 150 yards where I found a good trail on the right that head southeast .6 miles to the summit area. The trail descends to a low/wet area before climbing to the summit, it is open all the way, a nice walk. The HP is not obvious, I stomped around some.
DESCENT .... 2 miles, 45 minutes descent from Bald Knob.
From Bald Knob I backtracked 1.1 miles to the Weiss/Bald knob saddle (this is where the right-of-way makes a small change in its direction) as it started to rain. I short-cutted my return by bushwacking west 150 yards to the Timber Ski Trail, then rushed back to my TH .... completely soaked as the rains ceased.
