Ascent Trip ReportThese hikes were part of the Spring Fling with HPS. On Saturday, we did Ken Pt. This was a scheduled hike with Wayne Vollaire and Marlen Mertz as co-leaders. Joining us was Bob Sturard, Michael Albanesa and Louie Hoffman. Sunday was a private hike with Mary Valayay and Louie Hoffman. We did 2 HPS peaks and on Peakbagger Peak (Gold).
Saturday, we started at where the PCT crosses 74. We went up about 5 miles to a point where the trail crosses an old road. We thought we would try a shortcut shown as a possible route on the HPS map. It started out well, but soon turned into a bushwhack. I would not recommend this shortcut. It saved us about 1 mile but lost us time. After Ken, we went down the road to the vehicles. I spent the night at the Hurkey Creek campground.
Sunday, we did Butterfly via the standard route 1. It was well ducked which saved us a lot of time. On the way down, we did Gold. We started at the Katie Dig foundation and picked our way around the brush to the summit. There was no register or benchmark. After Gold, we did Rock Point via Rt. 1. No problems with Rock. We found registers on all three HPS peaks.
