Ascent Trip Report

I spent Wednesday afternoon after a work conference driving almost 6 hours northwest from Orlando to the Florida State high point, Britton Hill.

At only 345 feet, Britton Hill is the lowest US state high point and is lower than many other state low points. Florida is FLAT. The drive started out perfect with the mile high clouds you often see there but quickly deteriorated into torrential rain, lightning and thunder, which is also quite normal this time of year. There were some scary moments… The combination of uneven roads, heavy rain, big trucks and incredible views made the drive somewhat treacherous.

Although the quality of the high point was marginal (2 on a subjective scale of 1 to10), it was a beautiful drive with remote wooded areas, farms and incredible cloud formations much of the way.

My favorite part of the state high point list so far is seeing parts of the country that are so different from home.
