Ascent Trip ReportGot a late start from our family reunion site at Estes Park YMCA Camp and, therefore, broke the golden rule of Colorado 14'ers with a late start (~9:30am) from the trailhead. The large group made for a wide range of pace. By the time we reached the Gray's summit the weather was bad. One quick picture of Irene, Booney and Kim on top later revealed Irene's hair standing on end due to the electricity in the air.
We immediately descended the ridge toward Torrey's with the plan to continue to descend from the saddle if the weather didn't improve. With marginal improvement by the time we reached the saddle, Kim convinced me to start up the ridge to Torrey's. I agreed but told her that, if I said so, we would turn around. I so said with 50' left and she was livid. As we ran down the ridge the clouds started to boil. Fortunately, by the time the rain and hail let loose, we were in the valley and out of the worst of it. We were cold and wet by the time we reached the trailhead.
