Ascent Trip ReportFour of us hired a car & guide from San Pedro Atitlán, can't remember exactly how much we paid, but be prepared to negotiate - it was about Q90 each I think. We were picked up outside our hostel at 4am and driven to Santa Clara. Our driver introduced us to our guide, who spoke decent English. He was constantly talking to other guides/security people on a 2-way radio - it was pitch black & there had been reports of robberies.
The hike up was pretty easy, about 20minutes - there were no banditos on the way, I never personally experienced any crime during my 5weeks in Guatemala, nor did I hear any firsthand stories of tourists being robbed. Our guide told us that a few days previously he and his group had come face-to-face with a young jaguar on the hike up, but we weren't so lucky.
For a few minutes we were alone at the viewpoint, but unfortunately the calm was short-lived as the Chabad house in San Pedro had also chosen that day to run their Jewish-only tour to Indian Nose. A huge group arrived and proceeded to get in the way of everyone else's view while they took selfies and posed for endless photos while talking and singing loudly in Hebrew.
Nevertheless, the view and experience was spectacular, a must-do if you are in Guatemala. |
