Ascent Trip ReportI paid $16 Aussie at the entrance to the park and the family chairlift fee, $xxx, cash or Master Card only, like everyone else to avoid the steep hike out of the valley. It's a well-marked 13.5 km round trip starting on paved rocks, then a metal grate walkway going up to the bathrooms at the xxx trail junction, then antierosion plastic webbing leading from there to the top, so it's practically impossible to lose the trail unless covered by snow. A helicopter was also flying in replacement metal walkway, because, as they said, the metal ribbing was getting old and slippery. The lift starts at 9 am, and you can buy tickets at Threadbo Sports (at the Depot) a few steps below. Follow the elevated walkway across Threadbo Road just past the information center. In non-ski season, most visitors park 100 meters further on and walk back to the walkway to catch the lift. We were on the lift by at 9:30 am and there were only a few earlybirds going up before us. It was cool, almost cold, with a strong headwind, so we didn't stop for long and kept 3 layers on to keep warm. The bad news was it was windy on top, the good news that it wasn't worse than the wind on the trail. There were few places to huddle out of the wind. On the way down we passed about a 100 school kids were coming up the trail on the way to the top. The most interesting part of the climb was the detour we took about half way down to climb North Rams Head, which was much more challenging. Of course, Kossie, as it's called locally, is still a must do as the high point. See my North Rams Head trip report for the GPS track from the top of Kozzie to the chairlift to Threadbo Sports where you can buy chairlift tickets, with a side trip up to North Rams Head. |
