Ascent Trip Report

Finally, on Sunday, last day of Open Weekend at Davis Mountains Preserve, the sun has come out.

Parked in the Madera Canyon Rd lot just before the gate and away from the dead lodgepole pines. Hiked up Tobe Gap Rd, then took a right in the wash that runs to Madera Tank and bushwhacked the wash (didn't know there was a road that went there a little ways up further). Got to Madera Tank and took a good rest before we started the real bushwhack up Peak 7320. We followed a route I plotted on Google Earth and that I copied to my GPS unit. The idea was to slide to the right of a ridge to avoid the unnecessary up and down, then keep to the left of the rock ledges on the East arm of the mountain, and keep right of the South arm of the mountain which also had rock ledges, but to then get up over the East arm onto the ridgeline. We pretty much followed that route with little adjustments for trees, cacti, and other fun stuff. The summit was over one knoll and around a second knoll and was mostly rock outcroppings. Good views, especially of Madera Canyon, Livermore, and Mescalero. Made it back in time before the 4 PM Sunday closing.
