Ascent Trip Report

Duane left his climbing shoes at the base of the Citadel when we rapped off, so we cancelled our plans to rock climb in the nearby Doña Ana Mountains and headed back to the Citadel to climb the 5.6 route and grab the shoes. I led the first, third, and fifth pitches. Duane led the second, fourth, and sixth. There is a significant amount of rope drag as you ascend these pitches, so you cannot run out the full length of the rope, especially on the 5th and 6th pitches. We did not top out as it was growing late. Instead, we scrambled down the standard descent gully once we arrived at it. It would have only been one more 4th class pitch to the top and then a rap back down it. Pretty good climb, though a lot of route finding is required. Luck was in my favor for the day as the first and third pitches were the best quality. The third pitch was the crux pitch as well. Great day out on the rock! Pics
