Ascent Trip ReportThe forecast for Saturday was cold rain and sleet so I decided to take Friday off. My initial plan was to hike up Indian Head and Twin via Jimmy Dolan Notch Trail. After assessing the snow I decided to leave the snowshoes in the car. I barebooted for the first mile or so and then went to the microspikes. I hit Indian Head first and only stopped for a few short hydration stops and to take in some limited views. Continuing on, the hike up Twin was beautiful. The large rock ledges offered some nice views throughout the trees. I reached the lower summit which offered the best views. I think this is one of the best viewing spots in the Catskills. This is where I decided that is was simply too spectacular of a day to turn around now so I headed off to the true summit of Twin and then Sugarloaf. The trip down the other side of Twin is fun but you have to be careful since there are a few tricky spots. The hike up Sugarloaf seemed to take a bit longer than anticipated but wasn't too bad, just one or two spots to watch your footing. I stopped at the top of Sugarloaf for a nice snack of Jarlesburg cheese and Realsticks. Knowing I had to reascend Twin I only stayed for ten or fifteen minutes. The trip down Sugarloaf went fine, but I was moving a bit slow back up Twin. I liked this summit so much I guess that was why I decided to hike it twice today. I hit Twin and continued over to the open ledges with the best views to rest for a bit. I just love the outlook from here. The sky was deep blue with just a few high clouds to the west. I couldn't believe that I had all three summits to myself on such a gorgeous day. I still had a few miles to go so said goodbye to the views, headed back down to Jimmy Dolan Notch and then the car. |
