Ascent of Black Mountain on 2015-03-12
|Date:||Thursday, March 12, 2015|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||8330 ft / 2538 m|
Ascent Trip ReportMy pal Al Parker drove over to Missoula late from Bozeman and we awoke early to go hike in the Scapegoat. The next day, the weather looked ominous up near Cooper Lake, so we continued on down the Avon Valley and up Ophir Creek to climb Black Mountain instead. It was mid-March and so snowshoes were needed for most of the trip. The GPS route below is a nice one for the winter time, due to the fact that you can't get too much further up Ophir Creek on the road than where we started. On the other hand, the flanks of Black are popular for snowmobiling (though we saw none). This is a nice winter outing, with a great deal of walking through open forest. Up high, the whitebark pine are beautiful.
