Ascent Trip ReportA clockwise round of Birkett Fell, Hart Side, Green Side, Stybarrow Dodd, Watson's Dodd, Great Dodd, Calfhow Pike, Clough Head and White Pike from the road junction 1.5 km west of Dockray.
"Dodd" is a dialect word of northern England/southern Scotland meaning a bare hill with a rounded top; certainly this group may lack topographical drama but nevertheless form the northern end of the Helvellyn Range and is beautifully located for panoramic views, including serially Ullswater, Thirlmere, Bassenthwaithe Lake and Derwent Water, as well as all the higher fell groups. On a fine early spring day like today with cloud level consistently over 950 metres, blue sky, singing skylarks and enough snow on the northern slopes to add grandeur to the hills it felt great to be alive.
19 km in just under 5 hours (including all stops).
