Ascent Trip Report

Beautiful, sunny yet cold winter day for Kaaterskill High Peak.
Organizer/Lead: Marv Freedman
Group of 4: Cynthia (me), Vivien Eng, Albert Turri, Marv Freedman
Near the summit, we ran into a woman, Linda, who was solo-hiking

Start: 9 am from Platte Cove Road
Kaaterskill Summit: 12 pm
Start Descent: 1 pm
Finish: 3 pm
Est. Total Miles: 7.2 miles

We followed the snowmobile trail (blue/red markers to red markers) as far as we could from Platte Cove Road, then bushwhacked to the summit. We did not go up Hurricane Ledge, but spent about an hour on the summit and Hurricane Ledge area as a lunch break. Very mild hiking to the summit, started to get windy on the summit and the descent. Descent was backtracking down our ascent path.

Snowshoes were not needed until we arrived at the 1st juncture and path started getting a little steep. No poles used. Butt slid down the steep ascent. There was a part right before the summit, where the ascent was steep and because of the the snow accumulation, a need to literally belly up under a large tree branch. Snow was very packed. We were able to follow former trail breaking activities - faint trail marks almost 100% up to the summit. Trail foot marks helped us navigate the bushwhack portion to the summit. Could not find the traces of airplane wreck. Used the GPS to determine 'summit point' for our summit photos as well as get to Hurricane Ledge in a timely fashion.

Great hike day!
