Ascent Trip Report

There's parking for 2-3 cars, on the south side of Tantalus Dr., before a driveway, where we started a few hundreds meters past mile marker 4.0 coming up from the Honolulu side. Across on the north side of Tantalus drive, we followed the narrow concrete road with a house number on it, which was just to the right of the signed Kalawahine Trail, and a notice that there were dangerous cliffs along side the trail. Proceeding on the concrete road, and it's a steep grade practically all the way, we passed the entrance to one house just before a locked gate--where we saw a couple motorbikes parked here on the way down, but the road is just wide enough for a small car with thick bamboo close on either side, so I wouldn't advise driving on it. Further up, it levels out with another concrete road going down to the left (probably to pick up the trail further down) and the Pu'Ohi'a Trail going straight ahead and downward. We took the upward concrete road going to the right toward the peak for a short walk ending at a fenced microwave tower. We then took a use trail to the left a short way to the top, which was marked with the Tantalus USGS marker. The high point is a concrete box where one could sit out rain but not wind due to it being open on opposite sides.
