Ascent Trip ReportA somewhat relaxed 2 day trip from the UK flying to Budapest. We arrived in the evening and stayed at the friendly and authentic Budapest Panorama Central 'hotel'(recommended). The next morning we caught the 09:15 bus from Budapest Puskas Ferenc Stadion bus station to Matrahaza. Several departures to choose from (www.volanbusz.hu/en/timetable/lines/line?menetrend=1045) price HUF2010 one way. Arrived Matrahaza 10:56 where there is a car park with group of stalls; a few were open selling souvenirs and snacks. There's a map showing the walks starting from Matrahaza but no indication of the route to their destinations; these local maps are common in the area and the paths are well marked on the ground so all that's needed is a little faith. We take the 4km route marked by horizontal blue line on white background; for the most part it ascends beside a ski slope in beech woods. Skiing has finished for the season and remnants of melting snow become continuous only above 900m.
The path arrives at the summit which is fairly flattish, the official high point being a painted boulder mounted on a stepped plinth. The reservoir enclosed by fence just to the SE is slightly higher. There is a public gallery high on the TV tower which provides good views of surrounding wooded hills - I think there is probably an entry charge but when we were there the attendant was at lunch. Back at ground level we had lunch in the local cafe - restaurant, a hearty bean, bacon and sausage soup with glass of Borsodi beer. Temperature +5C, occasional N breeze, misty cloud.
Our descent was to Matrafured following the route marked by a horizontal green line on a white background; it's a narrow path through open beech and oak woods with a remote feel. The grey scene of tall trunks of beech trees fading into the mist was really quite attractive. We arrived at Matrfured 15:30 and caught the 15:45 bus back to Budapest (tickets purchased on bus from driver) leaving plenty of time to soak in the 38C water at the Szechenyi Thermal Baths. |
