Ascent Trip Report

Kelley and I started at the McCain Valley road, about 1 mile north of the Cottonwood Campground; the trailhead is higher then the top of both peaks. We followed a dirt road to the Canebrake dirt road, which eventually turned into the Pepperwood trail. We hiked on the Pepperwood trail into Canebrake Valley, then went cross country to the base of Red Top and Sawtooth Mountains High Point. The road and trail were in surprisingly good shape considering that not many people travel them, except for an occasional motorcyclist. Most of our route from the base of the peaks to the top of the peaks was very rugged and covered with boulders, some of which are very large. We heard some voices, but did not see anyone. It turns out that the voices belonged to Craig Jagow and Dagmar Platzer (we saw both of them signed into the peak registers). The Red Top summit block is 3rd class and is relatively easy and the summit register is located under the summit block in a large gap in the rocks. Also, the Sawtooth summit block is high 3rd class and can be climbed via a chimneys located on the south side of the summit block - it's easier then it looks. In addition, the Sawtooth summit register is located in an Altoid Mint can at the base of the summit block in some rocks. Kelley and I left the truck at 6:30 a.m. and returned at 11:00 p.m., for a total time of 16.5 hours. Also, this trip report includes the GPS track and trip stats for both peaks.
