Ascent Trip ReportA xcountry visit to 10 areas .... 3.5 miles, 2:30 hours RT including the driving.
There are 10 Candidate High Point Areas to be visited. I used Scott Surgent's excellent TR, this report only adds a few details/comments. I have numbered the areas according PB.
8 AREAS WEST OF HINES ROAD. .... 2 miles, 1:20 hours RT.
a) The gate for the access road was locked, so Hines Road was my TH.I walked to the areas, which is mostly tall grass with some trees/bushes. I estimated my total trek at just less than 2 miles RT.
b) I agree with Scott that only the 2 largest contours (#5 & 3) are the contenders and the rest are not.
c) The most southern Area #7 is 40 yards south of a house (doesn't appear to have had recent usage). A beautiful open spot for a house, great views in all directions.
d) Area #1, furthest west, is the most obvious area, outstanding location with great views, a hunters stand on a knoll is 300 yards to the southwest. The on-site coordinates were exactly as those of PB.
2 AREAS EAST OF HINES ROAD . .... 1.5 miles, 45 minutes RT.
I decided to use Scott's TH, at .5 miles south of Lindsey Road (at my GPS 34.48465,-99.96464).
a) Area #8 (34.48206,-99.96654) ... can be clearly seen from the TH at .25 miles, across a harvested field to the southwest, on the top ridge with a bunch of trees.
b) Area #9 (34.47745,-99.97385) is .5 miles further southwest at an E-W fence line with brush and trees, I crawled under the fence to get to it.
c)It goes without saying these areas can only be visited in the winter (off growing season).
d)NB: when wet theses roads will extremely muddy and probably impassible, so I've noted an access from the west with approx same easy distance.
From the TH for the 8 Areas above, drive north .3 miles to an ungated track on the right (along the north side of a fence line. Park here and walk east .6 miles to Area #9, from there northeast to Area #8.
We went back to our hotel in Childress.
