Ascent Trip ReportA mopping up of Wainwrights in the north Central Fells but very enjoyable for all that. An anti-A mopping up of Wainwrights in the north Central Fells but very enjoyable for all that. An anti-clockwise round of Raven Crag (plus Castle Crag), Bleaberry Fell, High Seat, High Tove and Armboth Fell (both tops). The first 3 hills being by far the best with extensive views to more famous fells in all directions, the latter 2 rather lacking in character other than improving views of Ullscarf as one heads south. Armboth Fell is sometimes mentioned as one of the most boring Wainwrights, which seems a bit harsh - Mungrisdale Common sets a fairly low bar.
Parked on the western shore of Thirlmere in a non-pay-and-display lay-by. Deep snow which made walking rather hard work (particularly the long traverse up to Bleaberry Fell, how I wish I'd had snow shoes), but the sub-zero temperatures made this otherwise boggy plateau much more pleasant. Beautifully clear and still in the morning with great views all around, it clouded over in the afternoon to a level of about 800m. |
