Ascent Trip ReportWe parked along Old Mine Road in the Tonto Ridge development, and hiked the road up and then across, heading west. Maps and satellite images indicate the old road leads to the Gold Hill Mine. Our presumed route was to get somewhere close, then bust up slope to a ridge and then to the summit.
To our surprise, we saw brand-new trails, and followed one to the top itself! This saved us the hassle of off-trail hiking. The one-way mileage came to just below 3, but given the quality of the trails, we made the top in about 1 hour, 15 minutes.
Later, we talked to a woman hiking who lives in the area. The trails are brand new, dating to about 2013-14, too new to show up on any satellite images. Now, the downside: the trail system is "private" in that to get to the official trailhead, one would need to go through a guard gate that fronts the high-end housing development in this ritzy part of Scottsdale. However, coming in from the Tonto Ridge side, there are no barriers, and it appears that a lot of people from there hike the trails. It's not like they check your ID :).
