Ascent Trip ReportA road/bushwack .... 1.4 miles, 1:35 hours RT.
This is our 8th Day (8th State) of our "Winter Trip 2015", county high pointing down the Atlantic Coast.
I read all of the TRs for this county, a must read for the high ground's description. I used Michael Schwartz's walking route.
From Michael Schwartz's parking spot on Joyner Swamp Road at 34.01635,-79.06075. I walked north on the road .33 miles to a right onto a lesser road (full of water through out my walk), at about 400 yards east came to a drainage ditch on the right (34.01835,-79.05299). There is another parallel ditch 40 yards further east, both not as wide as I expected. I crossed over the east ditch with little effort.
From here I took Michael's advice and stayed on the east side of the ditch as I bushwacked/found my way south 200 yards to the HP. I followed a tunnel-like animal path off-and-on as I snaked south, at times moving away from the ditch and coming back to it. I attempted to improve the path by breaking off branches with my hands (had to in order to move forth).
It is impossible to visually look for high ground, much too dense. I went to the coordinates 34.01684,-79.05310 and called it good. I added orange tape to the spot.
We moved on to Georgetown COHP.
"HORRY COUNTY WAS INCORPORATED IN 1801 AND NAMED AFTER AND IN HONOR OF REVOLUTIONARY WAR HERO, PETER HORRY. ON 2012 THE COUNTY UNVEILED A BRONZE SCULPTURE OF PETER HORRY INSIDE THE COUNTY AND GOVERNMENT CENTER. AS OF THE CENSUS OF 2010 ITS POPULATION WAS 269,291."
