Ascent Trip ReportIt's very unusual for us to be County High Pointing on New Years Day. This is the 4th Day (7th State) of our "Winter Trip 2015", we are on holidays, so why not.
This County has 7 candidate high point areas, all located at the northwest corner of the County. I visited them in the order listed below, numbered in accordance with PB. With the driving it took me 6h00 hours .... I should note that if someone wants to understand this report he should use the satellite images.
AREA 4 .... 300 yards, 30 minutes RT.
After over-nighting in a Jacksonville Hotel we drove north on Hwy #258/#24 for approx 20 miles to a reversed-fork just west of Richlands, where Hwy #258 stays right, we stayed left (straight) on #24 and continued 3.5 miles to a right turn onto Brinson Lane (large sign "Whippoorwill Campground" on corner), .2 miles north is Charles Deering Lane on the left, parked at this corner.
The HP is in the pine woods to the southwest at less than 100 yards, once inside, the woods are fairly open. I entered the woods from Charles Deering Lane with the first 25 yards having dense underbrush with briars, and came out on Brinson Lane with less underbrush and much easier.
There is nothing obvious, chose my spot at 34.92610,-77.65200.
There is a very wet/muddy hog farm 40 yards to the south and a small Cemetery to its west.
AREA 3 .... 2.5 miles, 1h50 hours RT
From Hwy #24 we drove Brinson Lane north for .7 miles to where it turns right, straight ahead is the entrance to the "Whippoorwill Campground". I stayed straight (north) and drove through the Campground for .3 miles and parked. This was my TH, 34.93599,-77.65388. The sand road past here was too wet.
This Area is in a long/narrow north/south contour with very dense woods and very flat land, to pick "the" HP you need someone much better than me. There is a good road network in the area and the north-south road stays inside the contour, so by walking the roads I believe is adequate to claim this Area 3.
From the TH I walked north on the sandy road along the east side of a small field, at 200 yards I stayed straight on the left road, signed "Whippoorwill", and in 500 yards arrived at a 4-way junction "A", GPS 34.94118,-77.65310 .... right is Cowboy Drive which leads to a small pond, left leads 30 yards to a Hunters Road (a wide good road that parallels Whippoorwill, signed private).
I again stayed straight (north) and in 150 yards came to another Junction "B", GPS 34.94202,-77.65380 .... left leads 30 yards to the Hunters Road and continues west. I continued north for 200 yards to a T-Junction "C", GPS 34.94341,-77.65367 ..... right is a gated road signed Ocean View Road, left leads 80 yards to the Hunters Road "D", this corner being 3 feet lower than "C".
From "C" I went right on Ocean View for 100 yards, then bushwacked south inside the woods. I then went to Area 7 (see below) before returning to "C" and on to "D" where I turned right (north) on Hunters Road and went 300 yards before coming back to "D".
I walked south on Hunters Road 200 yards to a right on the road coming from "B". At 150 yards (west) I bushwacked north to 34.94158,-77.65531 then came back to the road and bushwacked on the south side. I went back to "B" before backtracking to the TH.
*** everywhere I went the woods have super dense underbrush, can't see anything, no-way to pick a HP.
AREA 7 .... .5 miles, 25 minutes RT.
This area is in a large grass open field. From "C" above I walked the field to the north, choosing my spot at about 400 yards north of "C", 34.94594,-77.65488. A large hog/turkey (?) facility is another 400 yards further north.
AREA 2 .... 250 yards, 10 minutes RT.
A huge east-west contour, very flat and no obvious HP in an open grass field.
From Area 3 we went back to the reversed-fork (Junction of #24/#258) and drove north on #258 for 4.6 miles to a left turn onto A1 Taylor Road, .9 miles right on Potters Hill Road, 2.5 miles west arrived at the Onslow/Duplin County Line. We backtracked .3 miles and parked in front of house #546.
I walked south 100 yards and chose my spot 34.96604,-77.67200.
AREA 1 .... 15 minutes.
From the County Line on Potters Hill Road we drove east .5 miles to a left Alphin Road, .8 miles north turned left onto a driveway (just before Jones County Line) which leads .3 miles to a Hog Facility (3 buildings). I talked to Marvin (81 year old) and his son Rob (41), they raise hogs for a large company, they live at the very west end of Potters Hill Road.
Nothing really obvious, chose my spot at 34.97310,-77.67175.
When I came out of the woods after Area 6 Rob happened to drive by, stopped for a long chat mostly about the Hog Industry and politics ... an educational chat, a real nice/friendly/talkative guy. The farming business is tough work.
AREA 5 .... .3 mile, 45 minutes RT
From the Onslow County Line sign on Potters Hill Road we drove west .2 miles to a gated farm road on the right. We parked here, this was my TH for 5 & 6.
I walked the farm road right-of north 300 yards to where it makes a sharp bend to the northwest (the Duplin/Jones County Line, clearly shown on the satellite image). I bushwacked southeast 200 yards (trying to follow the County Line) to my chosen spot at 34.97155,-77.67802. Extremely dense underbrush with briars, difficult going. I went back to the sharp bend on the road
Did I find "the" HP ...no, needs someone better than me.
AREA 6.... .5 miles, 55 minutes RT
From the sharp bend I walked right-of-north in an open swath 100 yards, then turned southeast and bushwacked 300 yards to my spot 34.97275,-77.67675. Similar conditions as in Area 5, really tough going.
NB: This is one tough county, shouldn't be underestimated. I think I found all of "the" HPs but then again maybe I didn't. I'm claiming it until someone proves me wrong ... I'll come back if need be.
