Ascent Trip ReportAidan and I had arranged for a 2 hour horseback ride from Sunset Ranch in Hollywood. This ride included a summit attempt on Mt Hollywood, much to my delight. We met our horses and guide at 10am, and were shortly on our way. We had a great guide, Hugh, who is Navajo, and had a very cool outlook on life. We got along quite well. From Sunset Ranch, we headed up the maze of dirt paths and roads, looping north of Pk 1587, then on to the top of Mt Hollywood. The views were excellent due to some recent rain and very little smog. We could see the big 4 mountain ranges at various points on our ride: San Gabriels/Mt Baldy, San Bernardinos/San Gorgonio, San Jacintos, and Santa Anas/Saddleback. Like a drive-up peak, we didn't really earn the summit, but who cares? It's an urban bump, and much nicer than I expected. Griffith Park is pretty cool and worth a future visit or two. I would also like to ride the paved road through the park on my bicycle as it is not open to motor vehicles.
