Ascent Trip ReportWhile I was sitting at my desk bored since I had duty on Saturday and caught up with everything, my co-worker came up to me and said "The weather is nice. Little Si, right now. Are you in?" I did not have any hiking clothes on the ship or in my car as I had transported most of my personal belongings off the ship due to no future underway periods. I was left to hike in jeans and a shirt - oh well. 30 minutes later he was following me on I-5 south to the trailhead from Everett. As we drove south on I-405, Rainier came into view - the weather was looking great! We ditched one car in a neighborhood along I-90 and consolidated into my car for the drive to the trailhead. State Park Discovery Pass required. We were hiking up the trail at 2:20pm, with the intent of finishing before sunset. We made quick work of the easy trail, passing 2 other ascending groups and 2 or 3 descending groups along the way. We were on top in 38 minutes. Not bad for after work on a Monday in jeans! The trail is quite pleasant as it heads into the valley between Mt Si and Little Si. The rock climbing walls look like they have a number of great climbs on them. Sigh, just not enough time for every adventure... From the top we could make out Rattlesnake, Heliport Pt, Lindsey, Washington, McClellan, and Si. I used my new peakbagger app to identify Heliport Pt and Lindsey, which I was not familiar with. Not too shabby. It began to sprinkle while we were on the summit, and was intermittently raining on the descent, though very lightly so that we did not really get wet. As I headed west on I-90 towards Seattle after dropping Nate at his car, the rain really picked up. Looks like we just missed the front! Another perfect after work adventure!
Unfortunately, I found out that there is a scramble route up the south side after I returned home this evening. Next time...
