Ascent Trip ReportAccess notes: Red Box is located at the turn for Mt. Wilson Road right off Angeles Crest and provides ample parking early in the morning.
Both the lower part of old Forest Road 2N46 and the trail to Lawlor Saddle are in excellent shape. The trail traverses the south and western flanks of Mt. Lawlor, gaining only about 600 ft from start to the saddle. Thus most of gain to the summit of Strawberry comes at the end on the unmaintained use trail. The use trail goes over several bumps, creating some unpleasant ups and downs in both directions, but generally gains steeply to the tune of 1000 ft per mile. There are a few loose sections where careful placement of feet and minor aid with the hands is recommended. The views from the summit are expansive and on a clear day allow even for the Channel Islands to be identified far over the Pacific Ocean. The Los Angeles Basin and parts of the San Fernando Valley are also fully displayed. Most of the Western Angeles front country is visible in the other directions, including the Mt. Wilson group and, as far away as San Antonio (Baldy) and San Jacinto to the east. This peak truly has some of the best views in the entire range.
Thus, it should have come as no surprise that the peak is popular, as large numbers of people were encountered on the descent. Parties trying to pass each other in opposite directions would probably create bottlenecks at some of the narrower and steeper spots. Peak is best done with an early start to beat the crowds or on a weekday. I continued up the west ridge of Lawlor after regaining the saddle.
