Ascent Trip ReportWe lucked out and the gate was open, so Pine became a drive-up. A little guilt for not having hiked it, but it was forgotten when we went back down to the entry gate and found ourselves locked in--the code we were given opened the gate, but the same code didn't reopen the gate when we were ready to leave. Brad walked over to the HOV area and was given the new code (one of the rangers changed it during the day, knowing there were hikers locked in); the new code didn't work, so back Brad went to the HOV area. Finally, the ranger unlocked the gate with his key. The ranger leaves at 5:00,so it probably is a good idea to be off the Rincon Shortcut Road prior to five. If that doesn't happen, the fire station is right across the road from the locked gate and the fire fighters always have keys. I was given wrong information by the rangers prior to the hike, so it's a good idea to cover all bases prior to hiking there. Now carry bolt cutters in my truck.
