Ascent Trip ReportFrom Cardiff to the M4 to Newport then A48 up to Wentwood Forest. Drove and parked near what seemed to be the highpoint. It was a clear, gorgeous morning in Wales - blue sky, no clouds, and sun. Colder temperatures meant there was frost on the ground, making a really pleasant experience. The Wentwood Forest is a great area with a lot of trails through the "ancient forest". The highpoint is actually in an unheralded area with no marker whatsoever, just near a radio antenna. As I jogged along the trail I noticed in the distance a peak that looked like it could be a candidate for the highpoint of Monmounthshire... Gray Hill. I jogged through the beautiful trails about 2 miles to make it over to the ascent. The views from Gray Hill were spectacular - I'm sure the studies have been made to confirm the other high point, but this is a much better and rewarding hike.
From there I went back to my car and drove up to Blaenavon to bag Coity Mountain. So far I'm at 7/22 Wales County Highpoints.
