Ascent Trip ReportTrip started at the Kings Canyon Trail Head just past the Arizona-Senora Desert Museum on the right side of Kinney Road. From the parking area, there are three (3) trails. The trail on the left side is the Gould Mine trail, the middle trail is the Kings Canyon Wash Trail that heads down into the wash, while the Kings Canyon Trail heads up hill following a gravel-esque road. Left the TH at 2:20 pm under perfect blue skies and high 70 degree temperatures. The Kings Canyon Trail meets the Sendero Esperanza Trail in less than 1 mile joining from the left or East. Around Mile 1.6, I somehow managed to find myself following a narrowing dry creek bed that took me a couple of minutes to realize was the wrong way, turned around and found the trail following a set of steps heading up the right side of the wash. At Mile 2.3, Kings Canyon Trail intersects with the Sweetwater Trail at the obvious ridge line. Sweetwater comes in from the NE, and the Summit trail heads off the NW at this junction. Ascending the trail for the next .9 miles is a series of switchbacks. Probably .5 miles after the turn you will see the actual summit. At Mile 3.2, Kings Canyon Trail joins the Hugh Norris Trail for the last 1/4 mile to the summit of Wasson Peak.
The trail is pretty rocky, but nothing unusual. Made it to the Summit in 1h 18m, than trotted down the same route. Round trip was 2h 15m, making it back to the Starr Pass Resort in time to join my wife and her family for a tequila shot watching the setting sun. Would have loved to climb Lemon or Graham, but had a small window and took it. Nice afternoon out and good views from the summit.
