Ascent Trip Report

Needed a little more workout and the one way drive out of the BLM lands offered me this opportunity. I stopped at the White Rock parking and then saw the gravel road up to what looked like a small 200 foot or 300 foot hill. Thought it would be a fun bushwhack. I followed some hikers and then passed them, then cut straight up the hill and bushwhacked to the ridge. It was deceptively far! I had a plane to catch so for the first time today, I found my pace causing me to be winded and sweaty. Picking my path carefully, not a good place to wrench a knee or ankle.

Nice views of the Turtlehead Mountain but unlike the Turtlehead limestone or the beautiful sandstone of the Calico Tank peaks, this little range is not as interesting. Other than I found some crazy banded sandstone with stripes like a tiger and many huge ferrous accretions in the rock that acted like easy knobs and hand holds when some minor scrambling class 3 was needed. ON way down, found the pinnacles that I saw from the parking. Took a full hour!
I was surprised how misleading this peak is above the parking. I was sure it was a 20 minute trip.
