Ascent Trip Report

The Mountains-to-sea Trail (MTS) is easy to follow for the most part. Right from the small parking area on the west side of NC215 cross the creek and take the path right path going north, paralleling the road, to gain the MTS. At first glance it seems the trail goes straight and west alongside the creek but that only takes you to some nice campsites. I did not have the benefit of a trail map, only a GPS since Mt. Hardy was my Plan B (I had intended to hike up Reinhart Knob but the parkway was closed for winter weather). Once you gain the trail it is easy to follow all the way until the turnoff to gain the Hardy summit. I missed the Green Mountain Trail junction to the summit of Mt. Hardy but circled around continuing on the MTS trail and found another trail on the west side of the ridge just past a Mountains-to-sea wooden sign. This trail took me to the ridge and continues on a good unmaintained trail to the summit area. One passes a reference marker (Says Black MTN just off the trail on the way to the summit. The summit is not marked or obvious but I walked all around the area just to make sure. The true summit may be by a knee high boulder off to the west of the trail.
