Ascent Trip ReportThe journey begins at the parking area for Devil's Path on Spruceton Rd. After signing in I realized how out of hiking shape I am so the uphill hike to the hairpin turn was good to get the legs warmed up. The car thermomether said 34* and i could see the white stuff on the tops of all the surrounding mountains so I strapped the microspikes to the pack but ended up not using them, but I was close with wet, snow covered leaves they probably would have helped. So after hitting the hairpin I looked west and could see N.Dome. I took the compass reading (west) and started up. The cliffy parts were not so bad and easily skirted. I was beginning to encounter steeper climbing so I drifted North which I think decreased the grade with my goal being the ridge line. After the last steep part, to my surprise, I discovered a very well broken trail through the snow in the direction of the summit. So I followed it west which brought me to the Can. and a dozen hikers from the 3500 club. I had a snack and headed west which caught me up to the group. At the descent I decided to pass and move on alone. The next climb up Sherrill was much like the up N.Dome but shorter. I found it to be just as steep but there were not as many cliff parts to negotiate. I again found a boot packed trail on the top and followed it directly to the Can and 3 other hikers, Terry, Scott and Carmen. We had a nice chat and determined we were both going the same direction so decided we would hike out together. We headed NNE at about 20* and followed the ridge down. Toward the bottom we found an old woods road and followed it out. I sustained a slap to the left eye from a whipped tree branch, my doing. But damn it hurt. We ended up back at the road after negotiating/avoiding the private land. A very nice person waiting for one of the large group offered my partners a ride to their car, which was great because they had spotted cars, so on the way back to the other lot they picked me up. Sweet. Great hike, ok views with leaves off the trees, minimal sticker bushes and new friends. Twas a good day in the woods.
