Ascent Trip ReportDid a quick loop hike over Crow Hills from a dirt parking area off MA 31 in Westminster.
I started up a blue-blazed fire road (emergency access to ledges), then came to a sign pointing to the top of the ledges and to the bottom; I turned right onto the trail that ran along the base of them. Once I got to them, I was stunned at how big they were and how much of the trail they ran along! If you're hiking with small children, it's worth it to just go to the ledge base and maybe watch rock climbers.
After passing the last of the ledge base, I began a steeper and rougher ascent to the Midstate Trail, eventually making a U-turn past some other trail junctions. According to the map, the high point was off-trail, so almost immediately after veering left onto the MT, I went off trail to the right and followed herd paths to the summit area. (I don't know if I set foot on the true, exact high point, but I know I was in the ballpark.) From there, I headed back to the MT, losing the herd path halfway back and bushwhacking through hip-high growth. Once back at the trail, it was an easy walk to good views from the ledges. Wachusett Mtn, Ball Hill, Crow Hills Pond, Crocker Pond, and MA 31 were visible from them. Took a swig of water and some footage, then I made the steep and leafy descent to a picnic area underneath more ledges (where there is supposedly a scramble route to the south peak?). Eventually I rejoined the fire road, and it was an easy walk back to my truck on MA 31.
Before I left, I did my part to keep this park running and made a donation.
