Ascent Trip Report

This is probably the most densely vegetated Bald Mountain in the world! But since I didn't see a single conifer on the hike, I imagine the peak looks dramatically more bald in the winter. The foliage has begun to change so it was a quite nice tromp in the soggy woods.

Previous reports indicate that the pavement may have extended until the abandoned blue house. However, I pulled up to the turn into the woods just beyond 19 Mountain Road, the pavement cut out abruptly. So I parked in a dirt patch just beyond 19 Mountain Road. It turns out that the pavement picks back up again intermittently between that point and the abandoned blue house (maybe another 1000 feet up the road), but there were several menacing rocks and murky puddles thrown in as well.

Other than the different starting location, the rest of the trip was as advertised. From the abandoned blue house, follow the ATV trail to your left until you get to the pipeline right of way. I will note that there are several signs posted outlawing the use of ATVs but the poor condition of the gravel "road" and the numerous ATV tracks are enough to sway me towards this description. The ATV trail follows the right of way momentarily, but then heads off to the right, slightly uphill and back into the woods. The ATV trail then heads deeper into the woods, finally coming to the ruins of two old stone houses (one directly in front of the road, one to the right behind some brush). Here the ATV trail turns sharply to the right and uphill to the top of the mountain. The antenna station is obviously on lower ground, but there are few highpoint candidates around to check out if you are so inclined. Return the way you came.
