Ascent Trip ReportSunday (1A)(6X), Bohna (1B)(5X)
Heald (2M)(5X), Nicolls (2C)(5X)
This was a scheduled 2 day hiking trip. On Thursday, drove up to La Canada (45 minutes at 5:00), met Pat Arredondo (my co-leader for Sunday and Bohna), Bill Ossa and Zobedia. Then drove to Mojave (1 hour, 15 minutes), then drove to Wofford Heights (1 hour, 30 minutes) where we met Amin Faraday and John Radalj. Did Sunday first. Good road all the way in. Then drove to Bohna. Gate was open (despite what the ranger told me) and we able to drive to the old jeep road. The trail to Bohna was a little spotty in places. At one point there was a lot of downfall and we couldn’t see the trail past it. We finally found it and at first it seemed to be going the wrong direction but quickly turned back to the right direction.

After Bohna, drove to the trailhead for Nicolls and Heald where we spent Thursday night. The road in is just as confusing as ever. Don’t even think we were on a road at times. The peak guide directions weren’t much help. My waypoints were some help. Truck did real well. Definitely need high clearance in that area. Joining Pat, Bill, Zobedia and myself was Rich Wilson. He only did Heald. Bill Ossa only did Nicolls. George Christiansen (my co-leader with Pat Arredondo) and May Tang drove in Friday morning and started about 7:00. We met them about an hour after the peak. Friday, we hiked Heald first, then Nicolls from the saddle, coming down on the ridge. These two peaks together are probably one of HPS’ hardest hikes. There were a lot ducks on Heald, which helped a lot. It still involved a lot of boulder climbing, zigzagging through brush, lots of ups and down. Nicolls from the saddle is a lot of gain in a short distance. Start at trail head, go to H1 then cross the wash to a gully at 040, then follow 010, 011, 012 013 to Saddle. From the saddle, follow duck, use trail to peak. For Nicoll, follow 028, 029, to 030 which should be the route coming up the ridge. Then follow duck to peak on the left. Came down the ridge to 040.
