Ascent Trip Report

Santa Cruz (6G)(6X), San Rafael (6H)(5X),
McKinley (6F)(5X)
This was a 2 day backpack of the Big 3. Pat Arredondo was the co-leader. Joining us for Santa Cruz was Tom Connery and Zobedia. Joining us for San Rafael and McKinley was Chris Spisaik. May Tang was with us both days. We drove up Friday evening from La Canada (280 miles, 3 hours, 20 minutes). Spent the night at the Cachuma Saddle. The road in was in excellent shape. Very pretty at this time of the year, lots of green grass. We depart early Sat. morning, hiked up to McKinley Spring Campground. Plenty of water at McKinley. We then switched to summit packs and did Santa Cruz. No problem until you get to the saddle before the peak. Only a quarter mile and 200’ to the peak, but took us an hour to go up and back. The use trail is very hard to follow. Needs lots of trimming Sunday did San Rafael and McKinley then out. For San Rafael, stay on the trail to you go past the peak. Will see a short use trail to the summit. McKinley same thing. Go past the summit. Will see a use trail going over some boulders to the top.
