Ascent Trip Report

A trail climb to 2 peaks .... 4.2 miles, 2:20 hours RT for both peaks including all breaks.

From the White Lake State Park we found our way to Ossipee, junction of Hwy 28/171, where we turned westbound on 171 for 6.5 miles to Canaan Road on the right (it's 4.5 miles further west on 171 to the Shannon Brook Trail TH Parking, yesterday's climb). We drove north on Canaan Road for 1.7 miles to where it makes a sharp right turn and continues for .5 miles to the Merrowvista Youth Camp Main Office (Mount Flagg TH). We stayed straight (north) at this bend on McDuffe Road for .1 miles to a clearing on the left, we parked here, this was my TH.

I walked north on McDuffe Road 200 yards to a left turn on a Woods Road (white house on the right), .2 miles west crossed over a brook, turned right and went northwest for another .2 miles to a fork with an old cottage on the right. I stayed right (straight) on blue blazed road (the main Road goes left) for .3+ miles to where the road turns right and crosses over the brook (this is about .8 miles from TH). On the left before this turn the blue blazed trail continues and climbs west .6 miles to the Tate Ridge with a great Lookout .5 miles southwest of Tate Mountain. I believe this whole trail that I climbed is called the Banana Trail.

LITTLE TATE BALD MOUNTAIN ..... trail/herd path from Mcduffe Road, 1.4 miles, 45 minutes from TH.
About 200 yards before arriving at the ridge there is a small rocky clearing, I found an obscure herd path on the left that I followed south in open woods to the summit at .2 miles .... limited views.

I backtracked to the main trail/climbed and to the ridge where I met up with 2 guys coming southbound from Tate. They were somewhat lost, left their TH and thought that they were heading for Shaw. I put them on the right trail, northbound over Tate/Black Snout to Shaw. I stayed back at the Lookout, took a break and enjoyed the view before going north to Tate.

TATE MOUNTAIN
From the Lookout I climbed northbound over a number of rocky areas .5 miles to the summit. Lots of open rock, great panorama.
I backtracked to the TH, 1.9 miles in 45 minutes.

From here we moved on the Mount Flagg.
