Ascent Trip ReportFrom the saddle between McClintock Peak and Buckingham Palace, Joel and I decided to go light...real light. Dropped packs and drawers and took the class I steep walk up wild and free. How many can say they walked into Buckingham Palace naked?
The descent from the saddle was the crux of the whole trip due to very loose scree, a lot of mud, but especially the steep and very hard snow field. A lot of rockfall had penetrated it, and if you were to slip, it would have been a long fast fall with a lot of severe bumps from the rocks. We didn't bring ice axes but a self arrest still would've been difficult due to the hardness of the field. We went down on the scree as long as we could until crossing became mandatory, so we grabbed a couple of sharp rocks each and took turns traversing across. It was only about 20 feet, but I definitely kept my head in check for it. From there we descended to the Paintbrush trail near the Holly Lake spur and Mosquito Pond, ran all the way back and made it to work in time. And Dave stopped in for nachos!
