Ascent Trip Report

After completing another simple county highpoint even with my deliberate attempt to get as much distance and gain as possible for a decent workout, my thirst for being outdoors was not adequately quenched, so on the way back to the car I passed (once again) the new tower with newly cut paths up to the top. I noticed that the actual peak of this knoll was off to the side away from the tower on a ridge of open wooded solitude. Spotting some large sedimentary boulders I was desperate to select a bushwhack route that would deliberately require me to scamper-climb to explore the top. Bored after a long road hike to get the CHP, I picked a path that meandered me up and through a few fine rocky formations I could find to reward myself with some easy and far too short lived scrambling. Living far away from mountains with any real rock drives me to play on rock as much today as when I was a kid. The amount of stone, however, was disappointingly far less than I was hoping, and all too quickly I was back to just walking up a nice wooded ridge up to the obvious knoll's peak which was at least punctuated with a large oak tree with a large horizontal branch.

Hardly worth the effort, it was at least another 140 feet of vertical gain with some stone so I rushed down and back to the car deciding to next explore the feature on the USGS map called "The Pinnacle" hoping to find something more worthy. I moved the car back towards Porter's Gap until I found a place to park my rental car and was not disappointed with the next feature I explored (see TR for The Pinnacle).
