Ascent Trip ReportApparently it has been hot in LA for the past week or so. I don't know as I have been out to sea. My long weekend with Aidan culminated in this short hike to some random HPS bumps in the San Gabriel Mountains. Beautiful setting for a hike. I sure do miss California with all of its brush-free pine forests. The going is easy and clear. We started from Cloudburst summit and made our way to the peak in short order. I forgot to hang up my annual pass, so after the first few minutes of hiking, I remembered and ran back down to hang it up while everybody else waited for me. I was back up in 5 minutes or so - no big delay. The going was slower than usual as I had invited Aidan's mother and Aidan's half-brother (age 6) along. They both really enjoyed the hike in the beautiful pine forests of the San Gabriel Mountains. Aidan and his brother played on the rocks at the summit for a bit. The use trail to the summit is so well-worn that it is basically a trail now. We took the trail down the other side to the saddle south of Point 6,903. We initially traversed around the left side of the peak. Aidan and I were both doing fine, but his mother and brother were not too pleased with the loose quality of the use trail as they are not frequent hikers. We backtracked and headed around the other side to utilize the PCT for a larger chunk of the distance. Another use trail branches off the PCT before it descends into Copper Cyn. We followed this for a short bit. At this point, there is a nice shady clearing in the trees. Aidan, his mother, and brother opted to stop here. I grabbed the camera, a water bottle, and the GPS (for the track) and jogged to the summit of Winston Ridge. I made the round trip in 20 minutes including overshooting the summit to confirm that I hit the high ground, taking a few summit photos, and signing the register that was placed by one of my buddies - Jim Fleming. I re-joined the gang at the clearing and we made the hike back to Cloudburst Summit. Overall, the pace was slow, but everybody made the hike without any problems. A perfect day in the mountains! Only Blondie (dog) almost stopped. Luckily, I did not need to carry her out, as that would have sucked. We did not see a single person from trailhead to trailhead.
