Ascent Trip ReportThe trip to Yosemite started out under clear and sunny skies, but turned ugly on Saturday night when a storm dumped everything from rain to hail on us while camped out at the upper Young Lake. Had lightning and thunder through half of the night. The forecast wasn't calling for anything that intense, so we attributed it to the remnants of the last hurricane in Mexico.
The next day clouds were building up again, so we packed up to head down, but on a whim I decided to go up to the saddle between Conness and White Mountain to check the conditions. Marian accompanied me while Madalina remained at base camp with our packs. We could see fresh snow on the upper plateau, but it didn't seem deep. We made our way up the south slopes fast and since the weather seemed to be holding, we decided to go for the summit. It was windy and cold, and the summit ridge can be treacherous when slippery from snow or water, but we picked our way carefully across class 2 and 3 moves and summited before noon. We even got lucky to get a bit of sun for some nice photos.
As soon as we got down off the ridge, most of the blue sky was swallowed in clouds, which threatened to start dropping precipitation at any moment. We made it back to camp still dry, and from there hiked out to the cars under continuous rain threat, which fortunately never came. We really lucked out, again. Had dinner at Whoa Nellie Deli before completing the long drive back to southern California.
