Ascent Trip Report

We camped near Coal Creek then ascended to the saddle via obvious and fairly easy cross country with plenty of elevation gain (see GPS track). From the saddle, we followed the NE ridge to the "Great Notch". Some detours to the east side of the ridge were necessary but route finding was easy. From there we climbed the standard four pitches. The first is the hardest at ~5.9+ off the notch; this protects nicely with a pink tricam and there are ways to cheat it. The next hardest was the 3rd pitch with about 15' of well protected 5.7/5.8 crack climbing. Each pitch ended at obvious rappel stations. A few hundred feet of 3rd class leads from the top of the 4th pitch to the summit. Two climbers coming off Mount Doody said one can ascend the northwest ridge of Saint Nicholas to where it steepens then follow a goat trail to the Great Notch - sounds scenic.
