Ascent Trip Report

S'brutal Tower is said to be the second pinnacle north of Mt. Muir on the Whitney Crest. Bob Burd pointed out the coordinates for this peak in Secor's Sierra guidebook could be wrong. I dayhiked up to the Whitney Crest to climb this peak along with all the named high points along the 2-mile long trail on the Whitney Crest (except for Mt. Muir and Mt. Whitney). S'brutal Tower is certainly a tower if current thinking is correct. Bob Burd climbed it and said it was class 3+. Knowing this, I brought my rock shoes especially for this climb.

My approach was from the SW side from the trail. It begins with about 100 feet of steep gravel and rocks followed by some class 3 rock. This brought me to a narrow notch at the base of the west side of the main tower, above which the climbing becomes more difficult and exposed. I put on the rock shoes and climbed up what I would call about 10 feet of class 4, the crux of the narrow tower. This is followed by about 20 of class 3/4 to the final mantle move which gets you on the small summit platform. A fun little climb, although I would not have attempted it without rock shoes.
