Ascent of Ash Bearpen Knob on 2014-09-10
|Date:||Wednesday, September 10, 2014|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
|Peak:||Ash Bearpen Knob|
| Location:||USA-North Carolina|
| Elevation:||3800 ft / 1158 m|
Ascent Trip ReportNot a ranked peak, but it does count on the Blue Ridge Parkway peaks at listsofjohn.
Trailhead is at the Cold Prong Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway between Grandfather Mountain and Blowing Rock. Cold Prong Pond on the col is long gone, but I think it once drained down both sides of Ash Bearpen Knob.
At the northbound end of the parking area are signs for the Tanawha Trail and Cold Prong Pond Loop. Take the latter to the far side of the now-overgrown pond, then leave the trail and head uphill north for 0.3 miles. The woods are fairly open, so this is an easy bushwhack. Summit is wooded.
