Ascent Trip ReportA drive up or if one finds the gate closed ..... 1.6km RT.
This is our 9th Day of our 17 Day Touring Trip of Ireland.
The magestic Greville Arms B&B in Granard gave us a full menu Irish breakfast this morning. Our day's plan was County Highpointing and first on the agenda was Corn Hill, Longford COHP.
We drove west on R194 for 12km to Ballinalee where we could see to the north the tall Communication Tower on Corn Hill, took a photo and continued west 1.9km to a right turn onto L1041 (to Drumlish), 1.2km Northwest turned right towards Aughnacliffe, 2.7km northeast turned left onto unsigned xroad, .7km north just before its crest turned left onto an open Gated road which brought us (west).8km to the fenced-in Communication Tower. We parked just before the Tower.
I walked a road 100M to the summit, capped with a 4 foot high concrete Trig Pillar used in the old days for Triangulation (the exact same one that is on Cupidstown Hill and on most of the other summits that I visited on this trip). Limited views from the summit, but good ones from the road up.
When I got back to the car a couple with their dog had just arrived, had a nice long chat. We learned that we were lucky to find the gate open, normally its closed. There is no problem with hikers visiting this summit, they live just down the road and come up here every day with their dog. This Tower was put into service in 1976 (the whole Tower was lit up) .... the lady remembers this because she gave birth to her first born on that evening.
We drove back to Granard and moved on to Mullaghmeen, Westmeath COHP.
"ALWAYS REMEMBER TO FORGET, THE FRIENDS THAT PROVED UNTRUE,
BUT NEVER FORGET TO REMEMBER, THOSE THAT HAVE STUCK BY YOU." ....... irish proverb
